Smith Creek Baptist Church
9312 N. Congress Street PO Box 99 New Market, VA 22844 540.740.8560
Smith Creek Baptist Church is a fellowship of believers in Jesus Christ, joined together by faith in Him, and who upon profession of faith are baptized (immersed) in obedience to His commission. Our purpose is to exalt the Savior, to edify and encourage the saints, to evangelize the sinner, and to provoke unto love and good works.
We are a fundamental, independent, evangelistic, Baptist church. We want to be conformed to Christ, and do not want to be conformed to this world. We do not participate in ecumenicalism or new evangelicalism.
Our music is traditional and conservative. We sing with piano from the Living Hymns songbook.
We hope you will come to visit and that you will find Smith Creek a home to you. We want to provide a warm, friendly, and nurturing place to grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Meet our Pastor and his wife!
Brent and Kim Hockema are graduates from Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin. Brent has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pastoral Theology (1987) and a Master of Divinity (1991) from Maranatha's Graduate School. Kim has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education (1988). An ordination counsel was called by Calvary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, and the next day following the examination, Brent was ordained to the gospel ministry February 4, 1994.
Brent and Kim placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior at a young age, and were baptized in obedience to Christ on their profession of faith in Him. They have been faithful in Christian Service since junior high, helping in areas of Vacation Bible School, personal evangelism, junior church, and bus ministry.
Brent met Kim Fisher at college, and after traveling with the Maranatha Victory Players, they began to think that God was leading them together. After Kim graduated from college, they married June 18, 1988. God has blessed them with four children, three spouses, and grandchildren.
God moved in Brent's heart when he was a high school student at Calvary Baptist Church and Academy in Normal, Illinois, and he answered God's call to the ministry . God used the scriptures to confirm this heart-call: 2Timothy 4:2, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine" and Colossians 1:28 "Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus."
Pastor Hockema has over 35 years of pastoral experience, serving as an assistant at Waupun Baptist Church in Waupun, Wisconsin under Pastors Levi Robinson and Tom Boerma; as
Youth Pastor at Bensalem Baptist Church in Bensalem, Pennsylvania with Pastor Bruce Love; as Youth Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama with Pastor Greg McLaughlin, and as Pastor at Evangel Baptist Church in Florida. Smith Creek extended a call, and Pastor Hockema began June 1, 2008.
Kim has authored and published several items to be used for churches or individuals: a coloring book, a series of lessons from Proverbs entitled Wisdom Quest, and Ladies Retreat plans. Kim developed a website for an outlet and these products can be previewed or ordered at www.brightcornerstudio.com.
